Bowls
Thursday 23 July
Over two months since an update.
Lots of bowling, but mostly ties. Don’t seem to get much time to practice or have ‘bounce’ games. But that may be the secret.
Won the Knock-out Fours competition, although given the number of entries it can’t be considered to be any great achievement.
Unexpected defeat in the first round of the Nomination Pairs – unexpected by me in any case. Best forgotten.
In the final of the Nomination Triples – date still be arranged.
Singles competitions going well (fingers crossed). Update this later – don’t want to tempt fate.
Thursday 14 May
Back to bowling.
GBA Pairs preliminary round last night at a cold and windy Templeton BC.
23-5 win over Castlemilk.
Tuesday 12 May
So, it was the Civic Reception to mark the centenary on Friday night, and my first look inside the City Chambers. All very nice too. But it did get me thinking; multiply 200 people x 3-course meal plus free booze, add staff costs and multiply by the number of civic receptions each year. Now I don’t know the answer to that, but when you think of the nurseries and schools being closed, maybe we have our priorities a little bit mixed up.
On the other hand, after paying 25+ years of council tax/rates/poll tax/whatever, maybe I was due something back.
On the bowling front a victory last night in the Knock-out Fours means a semi-final next week. Says something about bowling club membership when one game gets you into a semi-final.
(Result for my records 21-6)
Tuesday 5 May
Really need to get in some practice.
Picked to play for the club in the GBA (Glasgow Bowling Association) pairs, with the preliminary round next Wednesday.
Also chosen for the Renfrewshire Singles but have pulled out of that since I will be in Andalucia half way through the competition.
Tuesday 28 April
Played my first ‘competitive’ game last night, struggling to a six shot win in a triples tie.
Played with Taylor Aces which I really bought for indoor bowling and I’m not entirely convinced I like them on grass. Maybe need to get the lucky old Henselites out once more.
Thursday 23 April
So, another Opening has come and gone.
Once more the Boardroom was stacked 20 deep x 12 deep x 2 high.
Elsewhere there is an issue with the new centenary tie – or rather – lack of same.
Personally, early season apathy has already set in; something I have suffered from for the last few years. However I need to make a point of entering competitions so a visit will be necessary this weekend before I miss the boat (much like the centenary ties).
Thursday 9 April
Bowling, not ten-pin, but the lawn variety; the old man’s game.

Mount Florida Bowling Club celebrates its centenary this year.
I’ve decided to keep a record of my results in this year’s competitions.
Depending on how badly I perform this could be a very short page.
The greens open on 17 April.
